CMS Pros and Cons

Using a CMS has pros and cons. Understanding what these are will help aid in deciding which route to take when creating a website.

Pros

  • Choose from pre-made themes, plugin’s, widgets, designs, etc. – Being able to use pre-made files for different aspects of the site is really helpful for those that are new at designing a website and do not know how to write out the coding required.
  • Quicker Process – Since you are able to choose from options that have already been created for you, it saves a lot of time. There is less time spent trying to write the code to do what you want within the website.
  • Preview when making updates – The editor is helpful when previewing your changes before publishing. You are able to see the changes before you publish to the site and make sure it looks the way you want.

Cons

  • Less customization options – Since you are using pre-made files, there may be something you are wanting the site to do but you can’t get your chosen file to do it.
  • Do not learn how coding works – Using the CMS site, you will never learn how the coding works within the files you are using. If you wanted to create your own, it would be more time consuming to learn how to create a file to do the things you want it to do.
  • Limited Options – If you aren’t familiar with how to code, then your options are limited to what is available from other people that share their files in the WordPress libraries. Some of these options may require you to pay for them if you want to use certain features.
